LA Arts funding to be Erased!

CALL TO ACTION Once again, the powers-that-be are out to eliminate the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, including all grants and most of the City owned arts facilities. We need to mount a massive campaign to stop this nonsense before it goes too far.

WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON? Late on Friday (too late for most interested parties to be informed) The City Administrative Officer, Miguel A. Santana, released his overall vision for the next couple of years, including a recommendation to -ELIMINATE THE DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND TRANSFER THE PUBLIC ARTS PROGRAM TO PUBLIC WORKS.- This effectively removes dedicated arts specialists from any involvement in the City-s cultural life.

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN? The City’s Budget and Finance Committee will meet Monday to hear this proposal. They will make changes, pass it on to the entire City Council, incorporate the ideas into the upcoming budget, or table the proposal. There is no way to know the exact time-line, but, given the current budgetary urgency, it could move forward very quickly. WE MUST ACT NOW and forestall the idea of eliminating DCA before it gains any momentum. We must at least slow this down long enough to give the arts community time to muster its resources.

TO READ THE EXACT DOCUMENT GO TO: http://cityclerk.lacity.org/lacityclerkconnect/index.cfm?fa=ccfi.viewrecord&cfnumber=10-0600-S61 ( http://gyst.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=P_W1rAAOAAEAAAYPAATfaw ) In the upper right hand corner, click on -Report from City Administrative Officer- to download the PDF. The pertinent material starts on page 95. If you have trouble wading through the language, please feel free to send an email to NewTown at info@newtownarts.org and we will do our best to help you.

WHAT CAN I DO?While the Budget and Finance committee meeting called Monday March 21 at City Hall, Room 340 at 9:00 AM. City Hall is at 200 N. Spring Street has passed, you can send emails, make phone calls or send snail mail expressing your views to the people at the end of this alert.

WE MUST ACT QUICKLY! Although there are still official layers to peel off before this becomes the law, we need to swamp their offices, as much as possible, to let them know the arts community can make a big noise. We must keep bugging them until they give in.

CHARITY
All proceeds raised by the event will go towards the “Japan NGO Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund”. WeHeartJapan took great care in choosing a charity that we felt would best help the quake and tsunami victims in Japan. At the time of this posting, Japan has only asked for help from two US based charities: “Doctors without Borders” and “Search Dog Foundation”. “Doctors without Borders” does not have a way for donators to specify which country or cause they would like their monies to go and the later is an organization that dispatches dogs to help rescuers find survivors. Search Dog Foundation has sent a team of 16 dogs to Japan and has already raised $100,000 toward this organization. While both charities are wonderful organizations, and we support them whole-heartedly, we opted to pick the “Japan NGO Earthquake Relief and Recovery Fund” who is working with the “Give One” initiative in Japan, which will give money directly to local Japanese charities involved in the relief efforts.

$865 dollars raised for "11 24" short movie! Thank you so much! Let's keep it going....

We just finished day #2 of shooting my good friend Michele Gutierrez' short flick, "11 24." As I have probably mentioned in the previous post, Michele was blessed enough to be chose to be part of Visual Communications' "Armed with a Camera" program.  Michele is a communty organizer and documentary filmmaker who is doing her first creative narrative short flick. "11 24" is dedicated to her Grandfather and it is a glimpse of her childhood memory, a story that takes place in Long Beach about a Pilipino American family trying to solidify that idea of an American dream in the late 80's.

Michele was able to put together a talented crew and together, casted wonderful actors.

The process is far from over as we still have some shoot backs to capture, editing, and musical score composed by Invid's Jonathan Wandag.

It's amazing to see all the working components to making the film. The different angles, the lighting, recreating a world, bringing words to life- all of it is nothing short of magic and hard work.

Please.... Tell your stories whether you paint a picture, write a graphic novel, recite poetry, make movies... What ever it takes to TELL YOUR STORY. nobody else is doing it. it's up to us to let the world know that we exist.

Check out the kickstarter page. we still need to raise a decent amount to cover costs. Don't let Michele pay for the whole thing with her financial aid. Invest in the arts =)

We need the community's support! Help fund Michele Gutierrez' movie "11 24"

A good friend and comrade of mine, Michele Gutierrez, is going to be filming a short flick under the "Armed with a Camera" of Visual Communications. This film will be screened during the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival for their "Armed with a Camera" showcase. Yes, this is exciting news for my friend and I am extremely happy for her.

And extremely blessed and honored to be her ART DIRECTOR!

Michele has been working really hard to put together her crew, cast the movie, as well as assisting with all of us in our roles. She has amazing folks working with her.

But we did come to a bump on the road. Although we are working with a $500 stipend from VC as well as a few dollars from grants, we still need to make a minimum of $1500. WE REALLY NEED THE HELP OF THE COMMUNITY!

Check out http://1124film.blogspot.com/p/support.html and see how you can help out. You can even have a chance to be ASSOCIATE PRODUCER of the film and recieve credit on the movie.. Don't you want to be in IMDB? =)

Live and Direct... My Thoughts on Painting Live

Ok, look. It isn't for everybody. You may have shown up at a night spot, expecting to grab a few drinks with friends, maybe head out to the dance floor and groove to one of your favorite LA DJs, when you spot a muthafawka posted up in the side of the club, easel set up, paint brush in hand, throwing polychromatics around to the beat.

And in a matter of hours, you see this artist, transform a blank canvas into something beautiful (or at least that is what the point is.)

Some folks criticize it as being "gratuitous", the "go go dancing" of visual artistry.

Call it what you will, but I dig it. For a person who takes days on a piece because of indecisive moves, being intimidated by the piece, or just distractions around the house, live-painting is an awesome exercise for me to break those habits. To trust each brush stroke, have fun with the piece, not care too much on how it is turning out, and to just chill the fuck out. It's a great way to actually see the artists that are behind the visual pieces and to interact with them.

Like I said previously, it's not for everybody. It certainly is not for the perfectionist, the anti-socialist, the "i give way too much care of what people think of me"-ist.  It's visual art that turns into performance art and there is definitely a level of vulnerability that is needed for that to take place.

Check out one of my live painting gigs... This event was called "Constant Elevation" and it was presented by Assembly Line Artist Collective at the KGB Gallery in Downtown LA.
