Taste of FPAC Event Kickoff
Buy your tickets below via PayPal!
FilAm ARTS is equal parts excited and proud to announce renowned chef Andre Guerrero as host, and his popular acclaimed restaurant, The Oinkster as host venue for our "Taste of FPAC" Filipino foodie event Thursday, Sept. 9 @ 2005 Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock.
Doors open @ 6 p.m.
The event, which benefits and kicks-off the 19th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture, uniquely pairs two leading elements of the contemporary Filipino American food movement, in an historic evening spotlighting two distinct takes on comfort food -- with a Pinoy twist -- made in Los Angeles.
The Oinkster, lauded by and featured on Food Network and named one of "Los Angeles' 99 Top Restaurants" by Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Jonathan Gold, has been called the leading practitioner of "slow cooked fast food.” It represents the latest in a long line of successful, critically-acclaimed restaurant concepts from the multiple award-winning Guerrero, hailed by Los Angeles Times Magazine as one of the City's Top Chefs.
Chef Guerrero promises a special sample menu featuring some exclusive, off-menu items, but will certainly include his house smoked and cured Pastrami, Belgian French Fries (named "Best in LA" by LA Weekly) and the famous Oinkster Ube Milkshakes.
That alone would be enough to make mouths water, but the evening also presents a specially selected tasting menu prepared by The Manila Machine, Southern California’s first Filipino food truck and already a popular draw in the competitive world of mobile food culture.
Limited tickets for FilAm ARTS' "Taste of FPAC" are $50 which is inclusive of food and non-alcoholic drinks for the evening.
Proceeds benefit The Association for the Advancement of Filipino American Arts and Culture, also known as FilAm ARTS, a multi-disciplinary community arts organization whose mission is to advance the understanding of the arts and diverse cultural heritage of Filipinos in the United States. FilAm ARTS presents the annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC). The largest showcase of its kind in Southern California, the 19th Annual FPAC takes place this year September 11-12, 2010 in San Pedro, California.

Friday Trivia Answers
Congratulations to our Friday Twitter Trivia winners Phil Corpuz, Melanie Lebel, and Carol Kimbrough and thank you to all who participated! Be sure to lookout for more FilAm ARTS and FPAC trivia! Here are the answers:
Q: What is the significance behind the FPAC logo?
A: It is an image of a Mother holding her child. Faustino Caigoy, logo designer, says:
"One of the most enduring imagery in all cultures is that of the mother and child. In celebration of Mother's Day (the weekend of the 1st FPAC) - the combination of feminine grace, as in the folk dances - with the motif symbolism, and the suggestions of pre-Christian and of the Christian era-merges and influences the image of grace and strength in the design element of the flora and fauna, indigenous to the Indo-Malayan culture. These are the elements of balance and harmony."
Q: What past FPAC headliner has an album called "AfroFilipino?"
A: Joe Bataan.

Boogaloo, Latin Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Salsa, Disco, Latin Funk, Latin R&B Latin Jazz, Rap .... What didn't Joe Bataan sing? Joe Bataan was born and raised in Spanish Harlem (East Side of
Manhattan New York) in 1942 to an African-American mother and Filipino father. His given name was Bataan Nitollano.
His musical experience started in the street corner singing do-wops in the 1950's. During his teenage years, Bataan associated himself with street gangs. At the age of 15 he spent five years at Coxsackie State Prison for riding in a stolen vehicle. It is unknown if he was the driver of the stolen vehicle. In prison he learned music and six months after his release, he began to record music. Bataan visualized an incredible vision that perhaps several recording artist may have said it is impossible to do. For more info on Joe Bataan visit his at www.joebataan.net.
Callout to All Artists For the 19th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture, September 11 & 12, 2010
The 19th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (Sept. 11-12 at Point Fermin Park, San Pedro, CA) is coming and the planning process is in full swing! FPAC is the largest celebration of Filipino arts and culture, presenting over 1,000 artists and cultural bearers from all over the nation every year. If you are interested in performing or displaying art at this year's festival, please apply online and upload the required documents. Submissions are due by July 23, 2010.
We encourage professional, amateur, hobbyist, and traditional artists to apply. The festival is open to any form of art: Traditional Folk Arts, Dance, Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Literary Arts, Arts Education, and Presenters. A submission of your application is an opportunity to reach an audience of over 25,000 people during the FPAC weekend, and it is also an invitation to join the Pilipino Artist Network (PAN). PAN artists are connected to valuable resources in their respective disciplines and are identified within an emerging artist network.
All submissions will go through a Curatorial Panel. Each submission will be reviewed by field experts in order to highlight the diversity of the Filipino experience. Each year the festival receives more submissions than we can program. Therefore, this process will be based on artistic quality, potential audience draw and variety of representation of the community.
Artisan Exhibitor booths and PAN Pavilion consignment opportunities are currently available. Act now and reserve your exhibition space today. Contact the PAN Pavilion Coordinator, Justine Calma, at justine@filamarts.org or at the FilAm ARTS office at 213-380-3722.

About FPAC

FilAm ARTS traces its roots to the annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) - an annual series of multidisciplinary arts events that takes place in the County of Los Angeles that includes art exhibits, literary readings, performances, and film screenings, that all culminate in a two-day festival weekend. The first Festival was held in 1992 at Los Angeles City College, as a project developed by the City of Los Angeles, in efforts to heal the city through cultural gatherings, in light of the LA Riots which occurred in April of 1992. FPAC has since moved to Cabrillo Beach, and then to Point Fermin Park (its current location) and welcomes over 25,000 attendees, 1200 artists and 400 volunteers.
